Understanding the Millennial nurse manager

The development and retention of Millennial nurse managers is shaped by understanding the support variables that are important to them, this study finds.

Interviews of a national sample of 25 Millennial nurse managers found they have a unique perspective on role expectations and support.

Seven themes emerged:

  • coming into the role
  • learning as they go
  • having the support of their directors
  • making an impact
  • helping staff succeed
  • managing change.

Understanding the perceptions of these young leaders is needed to create succession and retention planning that meets their needs, the authors say.
