UChicago Medicine receives 2023 Tyson Award for healthcare equity program

Editor's Note

The University of Chicago Medicine has been awarded the 2023 Bernard J. Tyson National Award for Excellence in Pursuit of Healthcare Equity for the success of its Systematic Treatment and Management of Postpartum Hypertension (STAMPP-HTN) program, The Joint Commission October 25 reports.

According to The Joint Commission news release, STAMPP-HTN involves a series of interventions to improve postpartum care for women with pregnancy-related hypertensive disorders. The program, implemented at UChicago Medicine, serves a largely Black and publicly insured patient population.

These interventions included education, updated clinical protocols, a kit with a blood pressure monitor and preeclampsia alert wrist bracelet, consistent follow-up appointments, and standardized protocols and workflows after discharge. Thanks to the program, disparities in postpartum follow-up visit attendance between Black and white patients were essentially eliminated, and Black patients had greatly improved clinical outcomes.

The award recognizes the success of this program in advancing healthcare equity and serving as a model for other institutions.
