The Joint Commission posts Top 5 most challenging requirements for 2021

The Joint Commission, on May 11, posted the Top 5 requirements that were most frequently identified as “not compliant” during surveys and reviews in 2021.

The Top 5 for Hospitals were:

  1. IC.02.02.01 EP 2: The hospital reduces the risk of infections associated with medical equipment, devices, and supplies.
  2. NPSG.15.01.01 EP 1: Reduce the risk for suicide.
  3. MM.06.01.01 EP 3: The hospital safely administers medications.
  4. EC.02.06.01 EP 1: The hospital establishes and maintains a safe, functional environment.
  5. EC.02.05.01 EP 15: The hospital manages risks associated with its utility systems.

The IC.02.02.01 standard, element of performance (EP) 2 to reduce the risk of infection associated with medical equipment, devices, and supplies also was the top not compliant requirement for Ambulatory Health Care, Critical Access Hospitals, and Office-Based Surgery.
