It is no long best practice to deliver education via a traditional lecture with PowerPoint slides or an unimaginative online learning module. “These techniques are boring and not effective,” says Beverly Kirchner, MSN, BSN, RN, CNOR(E), CASC, chief compliance officer for SurgeryDirect, LLC. “Staff just listen or read the information, pass the test, and then walk away, remembering nothing.” She and others interviewed for this article call for change. “The bottom line is that we as nurses and innovators have to figure out a better way to educate our nurses and keep them engaged, so we can keep our patients safe,” Kirchner says.
