New calculator predicts outcomes for metabolic, bariatric surgery patients

Editor's Note

A new surgical risk/benefit calculator that can predict a bariatric/metabolic patient’s possibility of postoperative remission at 1 year for five weight-related comorbidities will soon be released by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), the American College of Surgeons (ACS) announced on August 20.

Among the calculator’s predictions:

  • rates of untoward events, including surgical site infections, unplanned reoperations, and death
  • BMI, weight, and total weight change
  • rates of disease resolution, including diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea.

The Bariatric Surgical Risk/Benefit Calculator was built with data collected from more than 775,000 surgical procedures in 925 centers participating in MBSAQIP from January 1, 2013, through June 30, 2018.

The calculator was introduced at the 2019 ACS Quality and Safety Conference held in Washington, DC, July 19-21.
