Healthcare providers struggling to transition to VBP

Moving to information systems and data requirements of the new value-based payment (VBP) reimbursement system is proving to be a daunting challenge for healthcare providers, the June 13 Health Data Management reports.

A survey of healthcare executives from 190 hospitals shows that only 3% of respondents provide more than half of their care under VBP, and 62% have either zero or 10% of their contracts tied to VBP initiatives.

The results are a stark contrast to the announcement by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that it was rapidly moving to a VBP system, the report says.

 

Despite efforts to move the healthcare industry rapidly to value-based contracts, it appears that provider organizations are struggling to make the transition. Moving to the information systems and data requirements of the new reimbursement system, which rewards more coordinated, value-based care, is proving to be a daunting challenge, as organizations still try to remain economically viable in a fee-for-service world.
