Editor's Note

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in partnership with the National Library of Medicine on October 19 announced the launch of three new features on AccessGUDID, the public portal to data submitted to the FDA’s Global Unique Device Identification Database (GUDID).

Two new APIs (application program interface) and a download are now available:

  • The Lookup API shows all AccessGUDID fields for a single device record.
  • The Implantable API and Implantable Download give lists of implantable devices submitted to AccessGUDID.

These new features are available in beta release for user testing before their full release.

The FDA is establishing the unique device identification system to adequately identify devices sold in the U.S.- from manufacturing through distribution to patient use. You can use AccessGUDID to search for specific medical devices or download all the GUDID data at once. We anticipate the release of additional web services for testing by the end of 2015.
