Editor's Note

The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) and Premier, Inc, will extend their national learning collaborative to improve inpatient and outpatient care for surgical patients for an additional 2 years.

ASA chose Premier in 2014 to develop a learning collaborative to implement the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) model of coordinated care.

In the first phase, 44 healthcare organizations developed, piloted, and evaluated the PSH model. ASA developed tools and resources to support rapid implementation of the model in a variety of settings. The collaborative also assessed innovative payment models to ensure the model is financially sustainable.

During the second phase, ASA and Premier will continue to support organizations as they redesign perioperative care to improve clinical outcomes, such as reducing complications, readmission rates, and costs. National recruitment for the second phase has begun.
