Academic medical centers identify performance-improvement priorities

Editor's Note

Amid a decline in the financial performance of academic medical centers (AMCs), McKinsey surveyed 100 of these institutions about what actions they are taking to improve, according to an April 12 report in Becker’s Hospital Review.

According to the Becker’s article, the top 10 “operational levers” indicated by respondents to the McKinsey survey are:

  1. Length of stay
  2. Revenue cycle management
  3. Payer contracting
  4. OR utilization
  5. Patient engagement and experience
  6. Physician productivity
  7. Organic growth
  8. Supply chain spend
  9. Purchased services spend
  10. Pharmacy spend

The full Becker’s report provides further context for each item, such as how long ASCs have been focusing on the item and the potential for improving margins.
