Top 20 most expensive inpatient conditions

Septicemia was the most expensive condition treated in US hospitals in 2013, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Others in the top 20 most expensive were:

  • osteoarthritis, 2nd
  • complications of device, implant, or graft, 4th
  • complications of surgical procedures or medical care, 13th
  • hip fracture, 19th.

Aggregate hospital costs for 35.6 million hospital stays totaled $381.4 billion. The 20 most expensive accounted for 47.7% of total costs. 

 

Injury accounted for 3 of the 20 most expensive conditions for uninsured individuals but only 1 of the 20 most expensive conditions billed to Medicaid or private insurance.
