Joint Commission issues urgent update to CT technologist standards

The Joint Commission on June 29 issued an urgent update to computed tomography (CT) technologist standards after receiving significant feedback from those concerned about the expectation for advanced-level CT certification and the potential impact on patient access to CT services if it was required by January 2018.

The update includes two standards:

• HR.01.02.05. EP 19 contains a note (Note 1) on the expectation that CT technologists obtain advanced-level certification by January 2018. The Joint Commission has deleted Note 1.
• HR.01.05.03 EP 26 requires organizations to demonstrate that CT technologists participate in education that prepares them to achieve advanced-level certification. The Joint Commission has suspended implementation of this EP.
