Respiratory illnesses are currently prevalent in many areas of the country. Yesterday, one health system decided to take action to protect its patients and staff.

Acknowledging that COVID-19, RSV and flu are on the rise in its area, Duke Health Hospitals and Clinics yesterday updated its visitor guidelines for all of its facilities, including its inpatient surgical departments and ASCs.

Included in the comprehensive visitor guidelines, which you can read in their entirety here, a couple points are specific to all Duke Health perioperative areas, both inpatient and outpatient. In areas for adult patients, up to two visitors age 18+ are allowed per patient, with one in the clinical area; switching is allowed. In areas for pediatric patients, up to two visitors age 18+ are allowed beyond the parent or caregiver, with two adults in the clinical area; switching is allowed.

“Masking is strongly recommended throughout patient care areas and is required in some areas,” the health system stated. “Masks should be worn properly. Cover your nose and mouth at all times.”

Anticipating pushback from some patients and families, the health system advised: “Aggressive behavior is not tolerated at any Duke Health facility and may result in removal and possible prosecution."
