AMA 2026 CPT code set expands with AI, remote monitoring, leg revascularization updates

Editor's Note

The American Medical Association (AMA) has released the 2026 Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code set, introducing 288 new codes that capture emerging technologies and modern care delivery models, the association announced on September 11. In total, the update includes 418 changes: 84 deletions, 46 revisions, and the newly added codes. Proprietary laboratory analyses and Category III codes for emerging services each accounted for more than a quarter of additions. All new Category I codes take effect January 1, 2026.

Remote patient monitoring is a major area of expansion. Five new codes now reflect monitoring over shorter durations of 2 to 15 days within a 30-day period, while two codes cover treatment management for as little as 10 minutes of service per month, down from the previous 20-minute threshold. These changes align with research supporting patient benefits from shorter monitoring intervals.

Artificial intelligence (AI) received dedicated attention, with several codes created for augmentative and assistive AI applications. Examples include software-driven coronary plaque assessments, perivascular fat analysis to evaluate cardiac risk, multispectral imaging for burn wound healing, and algorithmic detection of cardiac dysfunction through acoustic and electrocardiogram data. According to the AMA, such codes expand patient access to advanced tools that enhance physician decision-making and improve outcomes.

Hearing device services also gained 12 new codes reflecting patient-centered approaches. These account for assessments of dexterity, visual and psychosocial factors, as well as validation of device performance, training, and smartphone integration support.

One of the most sweeping changes is a complete overhaul of lower extremity revascularization codes, with 46 new entries replacing outdated ones. The update reflects a shift toward outpatient care and modern technologies that improve mobility and quality of life for patients with persistent symptoms not relieved by conservative treatment.

The CPT appendices have also been updated to expand recognition of behavioral health services delivered via audio-video or audio-only modalities. The additions increase access for patients in rural and underserved communities. AMA President-elect Willie Underwood, III, MD, MSc, MPH, emphasized CPT serves as more than a billing system, functioning as a national language for health data interoperability, research, and value-based care adoption.
