Partnership with Epic fuels ASA’s push for smarter, safer anesthesia

Editor's Note

The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) has partnered with Epic to launch the Anesthesia Community Registry (ACR), which is designed to enable easier data collection, benchmarking, and insight generation at scale.

Powered by Epic’s new Community Registries platform, the ACR will complement ASA’s existing National Anesthesia Clinical Outcomes Registry (NACOR), run by the Anesthesia Quality Institute (AQI). According to the announcement, the combined registries will allow for more robust data integration across anesthesiology practices, hospitals, and health systems, supporting quality improvement and patient safety initiatives across the specialty.

ASA leaders emphasized the collaboration’s potential to help anesthesiologists better understand the care they deliver and improve outcomes using real-time access to millions of surgery-related data points. In the announcement, ASA officials noted the platform’s ability to streamline reporting and advance communication of clinical outcomes, arguing that the registry will enhance research capabilities and support department-level performance benchmarking.

Epic leaders, for their part, called the partnership a significant advancement in how specialty societies foster shared learning and clinical progress. As detailed in the announcement, the cloud-based platform is implementation-ready, with ACR development already underway. In parallel, AQI is upgrading NACOR to provide enhanced data access and visualization tools while continuing to offer deidentified national benchmarking as a core ASA member benefit.
