Joint Commission approves four new EPs for office-based surgery

The Joint Commission, on January 13, announced that it had approved four new elements of performance (EPs) for office-based surgery practices that prescribe medication.

The EPs for Medication Management Standard MM.04.01.01, which will become effective July 1, address the following:

• Having a written policy that identifies specific medication orders deemed acceptable for use.
• Having a written policy that defines specific components of a medication order.
• Using current evidence and practice if preprinted medication orders are used.
• Prohibiting blanket orders to resume previous medications.

The EPs align with requirements in other accredited programs providing the same level of care, the Joint Commission says.
