This study from Johns Hopkins found a wide variation in hospital price markups for major cardiothroracic and gastrointestinal surgical procedures in the US.
Nearly a quarter of the 3,498 hospitals analyzed charged four times more than the actual cost of hospitalization for the procedures.
Perioperative morbidity was greater at hospitals with extreme markups (32.7% vs 26.4%).
