In this study, active cannabis use disorder was linked to an increased risk of postoperative myocardial infarction (MI).
Researchers retrospectively analyzed 4,186,622 elective surgery patients in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample.
Of 27,206 patients in the propensity-score matched-pairs cohort, there was no statistically significant difference between those with (400 patients, 2.9%) and without (415 patients, 3.1%) an active cannabis use disorder with regard to postoperative morbidity, mortality, length of stay, or costs.
The adjusted odds of postoperative MI, however, was 1.88 times higher for those with active cannabis use disorder (89 patients, 0.7%) compared to those without the disorder (46 patients, 0.3%).
