A new article in ACS Bulletin, a publication from the American College of Surgeons (ACS), takes a deep dive into how the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare settings is forcing the industry to “reimagine the future of surgery.”
Dr. Lenworth Jacobs Jr., a professor of surgery at the University of Connecticut in Farmington and director of the Trauma Institute at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut, writes that “in the face of this incoming AI surge, healthcare practitioners have a decision to make: step aside and hope to avoid it, get swept under by the momentum, or learn to navigate this new era of health care and lead the path to an exciting and productive future,” wrote Dr. Jacobs.
“For today’s surgeon, AI offers a unique opportunity to transform the way complex care is delivered,” he added. “From preoperative diagnostics to intraoperative guidance and postoperative monitoring, AI can integrate multiple clinical domains simultaneously into a coordinated system. Rather than operating in silos, these domains can be woven together to form a seamless, real-time response that can reduce delays and streamline critical decision-making.”
