Preparing for active shooter events
Elizabeth Dalton, BSN, RN, will never forget the day her facility’s loudspeaker announced that an imminent life-threatening event was occurring. She was working in a cardiac care unit at an urban medical building that housed both medical offices and inpatient units when an armed man came into the facility and shot a surgeon. Unfortunately, the announcement was not specific, so she and the other staff did not realize there was an active shooter in the building. They only knew something horrible had happened.
