It’s hard to say whether staffing issues, finances, patient safety, or other areas are most daunting for nurse leaders who are new managers. That’s why the New Manager Track at the annual OR Manager Conference aims to cover the waterfront.

One of the biggest benefits of attending the conference is the chance to tap the wisdom of highly experienced nurse leaders. The “Ask Me Anything” session, which debuted in 2017, was offered again on September 17. The panel, moderated by David Wyatt, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, CNOR, from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, included Amy Bethel, MPA, BSN, RN, NE-BC, from UnityPoint Health, Beth Bozzelli, MBA, RN, CNOR, CSSM, from HCA Healthcare, and Donna J. Doyle, DNP, RN, CNOR, NE-BC, from OhioHealth Grant Medical Center.  Their combined years of experience and perspectives inspired and informed attendees eager to hear how others have managed the kinds of challenges every OR leader faces.

Also on September 17, veteran presenter Jane McLeod, MSN, RN, cofounder of Capstone Leadership Solutions, Inc, conducted “New Manager Bootcamp: Finance 101 for the Surgical Leader”—a workshop that walked attendees through financial terminology and explored ways to improve the bottom line. And in Wednesday’s general session, McLeod will provide strategies for bolstering resilience—the foundation for any successful leader.

Two other sessions on Wednesday will offer equally important perspectives on managing staff: “Overcoming Leadership Vertigo to Promote a Positive Work Environment,” presented by Christina Dempsey, MSN, MBA, CNOR, CENP, FAAN, and Gail Avigne, MSN, BA, CNOR, and the closing keynote by Meg Soper, RN: “IQ Will Get You Hired, EQ Will Get You Promoted.”
