US could begin distributing 2.9 M COVID-19 vaccine doses this week

Gen Gustave Perna, who oversees logistics for Operation Warp Speed, announced December 8 that the government is prepared to distribute 2.9 million doses of Pfizer/BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine by the end of this week or immediately after the vaccine receives emergency use authorization (EUA) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), CNBC.com reports.

An additional 2.9 million doses will be reserved for patients to get their second doses.

The FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee was scheduled to meet December 10 to vote on whether to recommend an EUA for the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.
