Survey: Healthcare workers’ intentions to receive COVID-19 vaccine

Editor's Note

This survey by researchers at the Geisinger Health System, Danville, Pennsylvania, shows a trend of increased intention by healthcare workers to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

A total of 16,292 employees completed the survey, for a response rate of 68.5%. During the period of survey data collection, the researchers saw a steady increase in intention to receive the vaccine, which coincided with vaccine-related events.

The first event was on December 10, 2020, when the FDA advisory committee voted to give emergency use authorization (EUA) to the first vaccine. Before the EUA, 53.2% of 15,003 employees who had completed the survey said they would receive the vaccine. After the EUA, 80.2% of 1,289 employees who subsequently completed the survey said they would receive the vaccine.

Of the employees who responded after the December 10 EUA, patient-facing employees (1,054) were more likely to say they would receive the vaccine than non-patient-facing employees (192).

As of February 18, 2021, 67.2% of the employees have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose.
