Postop outcomes in women having CABG surgery

Editor's Note

This study led by researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine, New York City, finds no significant improvements over the last decade in postoperative outcomes in women undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery.

This retrospective cohort study included 1,297,204 (317,716 were women) patients who had primary CABG surgery between 2011 and 2020.

Women had a higher unadjusted mortality (2.8% vs 1.7%) and overall unadjusted incidence of the composite of operative mortality and morbidity (22.9% vs 16.7%) than men.

The attributable risk of female sex for operative mortality varied from 1.28 in 2011 to 1.41 in 2020, and the attributable risk for the composite of operative mortality and morbidity was 1.08 in both 2011 and 2020.

The researchers concluded that further studies into the determinants of operative outcomes in women are urgently needed.
