Is nursing ready for competition from for-profit, nonhealthcare companies?

With the announcement by Amazon, Berkshire-Hathaway, and JP Morgan to form a nonprofit consortium to manage costs and quality of healthcare for their employees, nursing leaders are looking at its implications and asking questions:

  • Is nursing care affordable if it is not linked to improved outcomes?
  • What price are consumers willing to pay for nursing care?
  • What are viable alternatives to high-cost healthcare that nurses can provide to lower costs of care?

This new era of more competitive and data-driven healthcare models will require nursing leaders to define nursing care delivery in a more businesslike manner, the authors say.
