Is nursing ready for competition from for-profit, nonhealthcare companies?
By: Judy Mathias
With the announcement by Amazon, Berkshire-Hathaway, and JP Morgan to form a nonprofit consortium to manage costs and quality of healthcare for their employees, nursing leaders are looking at its implications and asking questions:
Is nursing care affordable if it is not linked to improved outcomes?
What price are consumers willing to pay for nursing care?
What are viable alternatives to high-cost healthcare that nurses can provide to lower costs of care?
This new era of more competitive and data-driven healthcare models will require nursing leaders to define nursing care delivery in a more businesslike manner, the authors say.
