The Joint Commission announced on March 22 that MedStar-Georgetown University Hospital in Washington DC received the first Patient Blood Management Certification by the Joint Commission and AABB (formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks).

The certification provides a third party evaluation of patient blood management programs based on the AABB Standards for a Patient Blood Management Program and on an evidence-based approach to optimizing care of patients who might need transfusions.

MedStar-Georgetown was featured in a 2013 OR Manager article titled, “Safety, cost savings, simplicity back broader use of bloodless surgery.”
