COVID-19 hospitalizations, cases up over the last month

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the 7-day average of daily hospitalizations caused by COVID-19 infection is up nearly 24% over the previous month, the American Hospital Association (AHA) June 6 reports.

In addition, the CDC reported “nearly 30,000 hospitalizations” due to COVID-19 during the 7-day period ending over the July 4 holiday weekend, AHA noted. The states of Michigan, Maine, and New Hampshire reported the biggest spikes in cases.

Florida has also been seeing an uptick in infections, with more than 71,000 new COVID-19 cases being reported for the 5th straight week and “more than 73,000 for the last four weeks,” according to a July 5 article from PBS and NPR for Southwest Florida citing data from the Florida Department of Health. The same data showed that 74,481 people tested positive for the coronavirus in the week of June 24–30, bringing the state’s total number of cases to 6,493,977.
