CMS granting exemptions for providers affected by Hurricane Irma

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is granting exemptions under Medicare quality reporting and value-based purchasing programs for certified providers (eg, acute care hospitals, long-term care hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers) affected by storms and flooding from Hurricane Irma.

Providers will be granted exemptions without having to submit an extraordinary circumstances exception request.

CMS will continue to monitor the situation and adjust exempted reporting periods and submission deadlines accordingly.

Irma, a powerful category 5 hurricane has impacted Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands as well as other islands in the Caribbean area. Hurricane Irma is expected to impact the Continental United States and precautions are being taken by State and local emergency officials in several southern and east coast states.
