The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) on October 31 recognized 83 hospitals for achieving “Meritorious” outcomes for surgical patient care in 2017; 568 hospitals were eligible.

ACS NSQIP-participating hospitals are required to track outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical outcomes and analyze their results. The ACS NSQIP recognition program commends those hospitals achieving a meritorious composite score in an “All Cases” category or a “High Risk” cases category.

Outcome performances were in the following eight areas:

  • Mortality
  • Cardiac: cardiac arrest and myocardial infarction
  • Pneumonia
  • Unplanned intubation
  • Ventilator care exceeding 48 hours
  • Kidney failure
  • Surgical site infection−superficial incisional, deep incisional, and organ/space
  • Urinary tract infection.

A total of 58 hospitals were recognized on both the “All Cases” and “High Risk” lists, 12 hospitals were just on the “All Cases” list, and 13 were on the “High Risk” list only.
