June healthcare security breaches affect 11 million patient records

June was the worst month of 2016 for healthcare information security, with 29 breaches that affected more than 11 million patient records, the July 7 Healthcare IT News reports.

A total of 24 healthcare providers accounted for 86% of the breaches, with three occurring at health plans and one at a National Football League team. A single hack of a large insurer database included 10.3 million records.

The findings from a report by Protenus and Databreaches.net come as the security firm launches a monthly Healthcare Breach Barometer, which cites data from the Department of Health and Human Services.

 

The high number of breaches span payers, providers and an NFL team and prove just how vulnerable the industry is, the new Healthcare Breach Barometer from Protenus and Databreaches.net said.
