Editor's Note

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on April 27 proposed two rules, scheduled to take effect in January  2017, that will ease physician documentation requirements.

One rule makes changes to the “Meaningful Use” program. CMS is proposing to replace meaningful use with a new program that moves the emphasis away from the use of information technology to one that is less burdensome and linked to care coordination.

The other rule implements the Quality Payment Program that gives physicians two options for reimbursement from Medicare−−they can participate in the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System or Advance Alternative Payment Models. The Quality Payment Program will replace all alternative programs such as accountable care organizations and shared savings programs with a single platform.
