Editor's Note

Introduction of the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) model for patients having ambulatory laparoscopic cholecystectomy at a Kaiser Permanente facility was associated with decreased length of stay and unplanned hospital admissions in this study.

A total of 878 patients were included in the preimplementation period, and 1,082 in the postimplementation period.

Patients assigned to the PSH model had a significantly shorter mean length of stay, compared to preimplementation patients (2.7 hours vs 6.15 hours).

Unplanned hospital admissions were significantly higher in the preimplementation group, compared with the PSH group (8.5% vs 1.7%).

There was no difference in 7-day readmission rates between the two groups.
